film directing

Steve Nguyen FlipHD: Quentin Lee 李孟熙 , Director/Writer

Film producer Steve Nguyen profiles Quentin Lee, an Asian gay film writer and director. He is most notable for Ethan Mao (2004), Drift (2000), Flow (1996), and the film short To Ride a Cow (1993).

Lee also co-directed Shopping For Fangs with Justin Lin, known for his controversial film Better Luck Tomorrow. Lee’s films are noticeable for containing male lead characters who are Asian and gay, two minority groups generally not seen as lead characters in mainstream Hollywood films.

Born in Hong Kong, Lee immigrated to Montreal, Canada, when he was 16. He attended UC Berkeley, Yale University and UCLA for his B.A. in English, M.A. in English and M.F.A. in film directing respectively.

Lee’s first foray into documentary film, 0506HK, premiered July 2007 at the Vancouver International Film Centre Hong Kong Stories film series, commemorating the 10-year anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to China. The film explored his personal and political perspectives on whether to return to Hong Kong, as well as the evolving cultural and social climate, through interviews with family members and friends living and working in both Hong Kong and Los Angeles.

Lee is currently in the post-production process of his new feature film titled “The People I’ve Slept With” alongside Koji Steven Sakai which stars Karin Anna Cheung, Wilson Cruz, Archie Kao, and James Shigueta.

How does it work when an actor is both directing and starring in a film?

There have been a number of actors who both directed and acted in a film, so I was wondering how they actually do that. Surely you can’t act and direct at the same time?

This may seem like a stupid question to most of you, but I’m exhausted at the moment and tiredness makes me stupid.

Ok, surely they can act and direct at the same time.
Thats exactly what they do. Being a director doesnt mean you run the camera the whole time. To tell everyone what to do and then watch the take on the little tv after its done to make sure it came out the wy you liked it. ONly prob is you cant be behind the cam but it usually comes out the way you like it becasue you hired the right camera crew. Its just extra work becasue you not only worry about the movie but also you being the main actor. Its extra work is all but I can do it and its kind of fun.

how can i get into film directing if i’m home schooled?

im in 8th grade and im home schooled and i wanted to be a film director how can i get started?
thanx :)

You would do it in the same ways that you would if you went to a regular school, except you don’t have access to an A/V department. Start by reading books and going to movies. Study what film directors say. Look for other people who are also interested. Find a summer study program where you can enter as a teenager. Study up on equipment involved and see if you can borrow or rent some. Learn how to use computer editing. There’s lots you can do.

Are there any schools I can go to for film editing/directing/production?

I’m very interested in short videos and sketch comedy, and I’m wondering if there are any schools (NOT college or college class) that I can attend that will help me learn how to edit better, direct and produce better quality videos. It’d be great if I could also learn about things such as animation and things that involve greenscreen, etc. I’m sure you understand. If so, can you please give me some details? Thank you!
I live in Florida, and I’m pretty much up for any info on places as long as it is within the United States + the United Kingdom ( :

Depends on where you are, you can do it in uni, its called media studies here in australia

Are there courses or majors at West Virginia University that can teach me film editing or directing?

I want to become a film editor or director one day. Are there any classes at WVU that can teach me that?

Have you checked their website to see if they offer a major in that subject?

I know it’s an odd combination but what would make a better support career to film directing?

I would like either to support my film directing incase I don’t make it in the industry with either premed or law. Please if you had to choose between the two.

Okay both pre med and law degrees are very serious areas. Typically, people don’t fall back on law if they’re tired of their film career. If you wish to continue making films, you wont be able to while in school for the two of them. I have friends who are in school for both professions and it’s quite tough.

I’m just letting you know, so you can follow through with what you want to do, rather than falling back on something you’re only tentative about because it’s so time consuming.

What college in nyc has a good program for film directing other than nyu ( sucessful almuni and interships)?

The New School, in Manhattan.
It’s where James Lipton of "Inside the Actors Studio" is a professor.

What’s a good quality and priced camera to use to start studying different angles and shots for directing film?

Camcorder.

Any camcorder will work to learn different angles and shots, but in your studies you will find out much about depth of field and about lighting your scenes. Ideally, a cam that can use different lens will allow you to apply DOF as standard fixed camcorder lens don’t really allow much if any DOF. Camcorders with an interchangeable lens option are not cheap. You could get by using one of the new D-SLR combo cams. They not only shoot high resolution still images but also can record HD video.

Two examples are the Canon Rebel T1i (1920×1080) $650.00 (body only) and the Nikon D90 (1280×720 pixels) $750 (body only).

Where to start at film directing?

Hey
I’m 15 and my dream is to become a film directed. My question is where do I start? I dont really know any actors/actresses script writers ect.. Where can I find there people? What are some good HD Cameras to start of with ( In the price range of £75 – £175 ) (Or $100 – $200 )
And if you want to give me ant additional advice I would greatly appreciate it!

before entering a film school….
surf the internet and know about basics of film direction

for that try this website http://filmdirection.net/
and after u know about the basics…..go to youtube and watch short films and award winning shorts like that….

after u get an idea abt how videos are made take a cam and shoot whatever u like and edit them so that u get some practise in shooting and editing….

then watch for an inspiration in ur mind…..and when u get it
try to get a group of friends make them act and make movies…..

i don’t think there are hd cameras in that price range.
